It wasn’t an ideal time of year for the 8-mile waterfowl auto tour at San Luis NWR on Labor Day, and I saw very few waterfowl other than a couple of great blue herons. Apparently in a couple of weeks the sandhill cranes will be migrating in; I might have to go back in November when their numbers peak. I did see yesterday’s mystery animal and several kestrels and harriers, but mostly this tour was characterized by landscape.
