MYSTERY ANIMAL

As I was driving along one of the auto tours at San Luis NWR, I saw something make a playful leap off in the distance. I got out of the car (which you aren’t supposed to do, but one of the other problems with my day was the auto tours would have been a bit better had I brought Mark’s Jeep instead of my Miata, because the Miata is extremely low-to-the-ground, which made it difficult to see. Plus, who cares if the Jeep gets dirty??) and tried my hardest to find the animal in the tall grass, but this is the best I could do:

WHAT IS IT??? I’m guessing coyote because it seems too big to be a fox, but it can be difficult to judge size from a distance. It’s something with cute ears! This would have been the most exciting sighting of the day if I could qualify it as a sighting, but if I don’t even know what it is, I’m afraid I can’t.

And here’s something I can identify, which is a ground squirrel hanging out in a fence.
