Vasco Caves cave

The caves at Vasco Caves aren’t necessarily the type of cave you may think of when you hear “cave”; they are instead caves in sandstone made by the wind over the centuries. This is one of the largest caves.

This is our naturalist, Frances, showing us a sheep bone found in the cave. In more recent history, the area around Vasco Road (which Vasco Caves is on) was inhabited by French Basque shepherds. EBRPD continues the shepherding condition by using sheep to graze instead of the more common cattle or goats they tend to use, because Vasco Caves is home to many species of native bunch grasses that sheep won’t eat. According to Frances, sheep used to (and may still) like to die in this cave because it’s always full of sheep bones.
