Ferruginous Hawk

OK, time for the MOST exciting part about my trip to Brushy Peak last week! I was so glad to be outside and in a park for the first time in weeks I’d have been happy there even if I hadn’t seen any raptors, but not long after we arrived a very special raptor flew right in front of us: a ferruginous hawk! The owl guru had had a specific goal of finding a ferruginous for a while and had just seen her very first one only a few days before. However, she said this sighting was even better as it was much closer. I wish I had gotten at least one photo that was as spectacular as the bird itself was, but alas, I didn’t love any of the photos. I was elated nonetheless. Ferruginous hawks are found only in the western portion of the country and are our largest hawk. I had never seen one before in my life.
