Brushy Peak Red Tail

So I’m feeling better – physically, anyway. I still wake up every day thinking I’m in some terrible nightmare world where Donald Trump is the president-elect and then I get really depressed and anxious when I realize it’s not a nightmare. I don’t know if I’ll feel better mentally in the next four years.

Last week, my owl guru, Sharon, mentioned she was planning to visit Brushy Peak Regional Park soon to check out the raptor situation there, and it just so happened that I was also planning to drive out to Brentwood in the same time frame to pick up a couple cases of tomatoes (how are tomatoes still in season???). Brushy Peak is halfway between my house and Brentwood so I told her I could meet her there on my way home, which I did. I hadn’t been to Brushy Peak before but I will certainly be going back because it was RAPTORTASTIC. I saw two species I’ve never seen in the wild before, one of which I’ve never seen at all, and it was a spectacular sight that impressed even veteran birder Sharon. I’ll be sharing photos from Brushy Peak for several days, both because with Thanksgiving (which I am hosting and cooking for) and also rain approaching, I won’t have a chance to get out again for a little while, and because we saw a lot of really cool stuff there.

I’ll kick the Brushy Peak extravaganza off with a ubiquitous red tail:
