Hayward Regional Shoreline

The other day I was feeling depressed that I hadn’t been in a park for a while as well as anxious to try out my new “hiking” camera. It was kind of hot out and I didn’t have much time, though. Hayward Regional Shoreline was the perfect place to go because it would be cool – even cold – down by the bay, it’s pretty near my house, AND there are tons of birds there to test the camera on. The next several posts will feature photos from this quick excursion. I felt much better about life after getting out for a bit, and I also found that the camera performed quite well for what I want it to do, so this was a good day.

You may be seeing more black & white images on this blog as I use the new camera. There are several black & white settings and if I’m forced to shoot JPEG I’ll frequently choose a black & white mode because I grew up shooting a lot of black & white film and I’m partial to it. Yes, I could convert a color JPEG to black & white in post, but I LIKE viewing them as B/W in the camera, especially as this camera has an electronic viewfinder (EVF), which means I see black & white as I’m shooting. And I rather like the B/W conversion Nikon does. Plus, I’m very busy and don’t have a lot of time to do a lot of photo processing.

This the trail that goes around what they call Mount Trashmore. Like a lot of the parks that are right on the bay, Hayward Regional Shoreline used to be a landfill. I’m kind of glad I’m a newcomer to the area and didn’t have to ever see that. There is a plane in this picture. It’s small enough that I may normally have edited it out except part of being at this park (and really, most parks in the area) is you will see planes. Lots of planes. There were lots of planes over the Virginia parks I used to haunt too. I guess I always live in places with extremely high air traffic.
