Avocet and chick

The owl guru, her boyfriend, and I attended a guided tour of the vernal pools in the Warm Springs section of Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge a couple of months ago. The area is usually not open to the public but they do a few tours in the spring to show off the wildflowers that grow there. That sounded lovely, of course, but the owl guru and I had a secret reason for attending: we knew burrowing owls lived in that area and had never been able to find them. As we headed towards our secret owl mission, we encountered a baby bird of some sort wading in the water. The owl guru and some others concluded it was an avocet chick based on its plumage and proximity to an adult avocet.
