Believe it or not, after cottontails and harriers, the most common thing I saw at San Luis NWR – far more common than even red tailed hawks – were Great horned owls!!! I’ve never seen so many owls in one night in my life! I saw at least 6 different Great horned owls, although two of them were technically outside the refuge. I wasn’t able to get photos of all of them, but here are three that I did get:
Yes, it was a looong drive to get to this refuge, and I’d rather have spent my visit hiking than doing more driving, but it would be very difficult to say that seeing six owls wasn’t worth the drive, so chalk this day up as a SUCCESS!!!
