The first time I went to Brushy Peak, the owl guru and I went there looking for burrowing owls, I think. We didn’t see any (surprise!) but we DID see a ferruginous hawk, which was very exciting for both of us, and some golden eagles, and basically it was one of those really great days despite the lack of owls. It was early winter and I recall observing the emerald green hills and commenting the park was probably at peak beautiful. And indeed it does look very different in the summer. The hills there are more bleached than others I’ve seen, kind of a whiter gold shade. In fact, it was so pale and the sun so bright that it was really very dazzling and blinding. Combined with the heat, it was sort of overwhelming and I didn’t stay very long at all. Which isn’t to say I left disappointed, because as I mentioned yesterday, even in that short amount of time I saw a lot of raptors. Brushy Peak has one of the highest raptor concentrations of parks within easy driving distance of me and I will go back just as soon as it’s not 95 degrees in Livermore.
