Following a short lecture about our native owl species and where to find them at a recent class at McClellan Ranch, the owl guru and I and about 60 other people went traipsing around the park looking for owls. A spotter friend of the instructor found a Western screech owl and tipped him off, so we divided into groups to try to view the owl without disturbing it. This was a nice group of people because they encouraged people with “big lenses” to go forth with the first group in hopes of catching enough of the fading light to get photos, which I thought was kind. Unfortunately we didn’t get there fast enough for me to get anything good – maybe I’d have fared better if I’d brought a tripod – but I’ve said repeatedly that it’s really rare to see screechies (you are going to stop believing me if I keep seeing them, but it’s true!) so not only am I saving these photos, I’m forcing you to look at them!
