We didn’t have lizards where I grew up in Maryland, at least none that I ever encountered, so I was totally charmed and kind of surprised to encounter skinks in our yard when we moved to Virginia – just one state south. My cat Gomez LOVES skinks; he loves watching them through the window. In California, all kinds of lizards are commonplace. Interestingly, I never saw a single lizard in the yard at our old house, but I’ve seen several at the new house, which is all of five minutes away from the old one and in an extremely similar neighborhood. Mez hasn’t cottoned on to them yet, but hopefully the lizards will hang out near Gomez-friendly windows for him. (Even more interesting than the lizards is the fact that my new neighbors informed me we have coyotes, bobcats, and yes, yes, YES, a MOUNTAIN LION in this neighborhood; they claim to have SEEN the mountain lion!!!! All I ever saw in the old yard was a raccoon and a dead opossum.) ANYWAY, I like running into lizards, especially when they sit still long enough to be photographed. There are two kinds of lizards: those that dart away the second you glance at them, and those that love the camera. This fence lizard was the latter kind.
