Anna’s hummingbirds

Anna’s hummingbirds. Anna’s are the first “California” birds I noticed. When Mark and I were here in early 2015 so he could interview for the first job he had out here, I went for a hike while he was interviewing and was startled to see a lot of hummingbirds – until I remembered I was in temperate California. I was startled because in Virginia, where we had only one species of hummer, hummingbirds migrate and don’t reappear until around May. I remember being all excited in Virginia when I was FINALLY able to attract ruby-throated hummers to my yard by hanging a feeder. When we moved to the Bay Area, I found hummingbirds already living in our yard, and our landlord hadn’t even been feeding them. I still haven’t managed to see any of the species that live here other than Anna’s though…
