Wildcat Coyote

The owl guru told me how to find the burrowing owl she’d seen in Berkeley, then asked if I’d like to meet her in Tilden Regional Park afterwards to look for otters. Of course I said yes! I hadn’t been to Tilden yet. Unfortunately, the otters weren’t out that day, but Tilden is one of those East Bay Regional Parks that is contiguous with another park, so Sharon and I hiked into Wildcat Canyon, with her announcing, “you can cross two parks off your list at once!”, as I hadn’t yet been to Wildcat either. I’ve mentioned that the owl guru is an excellent birder, but she’s also good at finding bobcats and coyotes. I have NO idea how she saw this coyote – it was REALLY far away and starting to get dark. I have very good distance vision but I literally couldn’t see the thing until I looked through my binoculars, and even through them he was tiny. It was kind of pointless to even take a picture of him, but coyotes are still enough of a novelty to me that of course I did. So these pictures are crap, but COYOTE! True to her owl guru nature, she also found a great horned owl once we got back into Tilden, which means I saw TWO owls AND a coyote in one day – exciting! I took pictures of the great horned owl, too, but they’re even worse than the coyote pics – it was even darker by then – so I’m not going to post them. I was happy to see him though!
