When we got to the Chimney Rock parking lot (you have to take a shuttle bus to both the lighthouse and Chimney Rock from January through March), I was trying to tell my brother how enormous male elephant seals were, but it was hard to judge their size from the elephant seal overlook. I guess a docent overheard us because the next thing I know, she’s telling Michael and Sue how to get to one of the nearby docks where you could get much closer to the seals. She also promised free hot chocolate awaited us in that location. So we trooped on over there and we indeed did get very close to several elephant seals, including a few nursing babies. At about 4:01 p.m. we decided it was time to leave the elephant seals and hike the Chimney Rock trail before the last shuttle bus departure. We tried opening the door to the visitor area to collect free hot chocolates for Michael and Sue only to find the door locked and a sign stating they closed at 4 p.m. Thwarted again! But here are some elephant seals and yes, Michael was properly impressed by their size. He also for some reason decided he liked them much more than the Fishermans Wharf sea lions I made him look at on his last visit, which he deemed “smelly and noisy”.
