Devil’s Slide is an old and difficult stretch of Highway 1, about a mile and a half long, that is prone to mudslides and accidents and was often closed. A few years ago they dug a tunnel and routed the highway away from the area, then turned the abandoned portion of the road into a park. I had been meaning to check it out for some time to vet it as a place to take out-of-town visitors, so after a lot of rain in January when other parks were muddy and inhospitable, I finally made it out there. There are small parking lots at either end of the trail and at my first pass of the southern lot, there was no parking. I tried the even-smaller northern lot and also found nothing. Tried the southern lot a second time and lucked out.
Oh look, it’s a red tail. I was actually hoping to see a peregrine that day but had to make do with this red tail and some ravens.
