Just a day or two after I discovered I had seen a burrowing owl at Coyote Hills, I returned to the park armed with an even bigger telephoto lens, and bigger hopes. I’ll just say right now that I did NOT end up seeing the burrowing owl this time (or the next six times…). But the same red fox I’d seen before appeared, on the same trail, at the same time of day, and not only that but she actually approached me. Apparently the foxes at Coyote Hills are really more habituated to humans than they should be. She really shouldn’t have been walking right up to me. She didn’t get close enough for me to touch or anything, but she did indeed walk towards me until she was so close I could barely fit her into the frame of my photos and eventually I put the camera down and gasped at how close she was.
At one point, she pounced on what I thought was going to be a mouse but which appears to be instead an appetizing clump of dirt.
