More pictures from Vasco Caves.
You’ll see a lot of wind turbines in these photos: the Vasco wind farm is nearby. I was gratified that the naturalist that led my tour, as well as the shuttle bus driver, commented on the devastating effects wind turbines have on bird (and bat) populations. They pointed out a few of the old-style windmills (they are smaller and I don’t think any of them are in any of my photos) that have been turned off because they were basically raptor-shredding machines. The turbines you will see in many of my photos are the new style which is supposed to be easier for raptors to see and avoid, although they do still kill many birds. There were old-style windmills located right on the Vasco Caves property until just a couple of months ago when they were dismantled and taken away.
As you may expect near a huge wind farm, it can get very windy at Vasco Caves, but we somehow managed to be there on a relatively calm, warm day.
