The other weekend it was HOT in the Bay Area. October is apparently the hottest month here; it’s weird. I had to run a space heater in my home office all summer, then October rolls around and I wish I had air conditioning. Anyway, it was too hot to hike, so I tried to think of other things to do. I have a book about day drives in the Bay Area and for one of the drives the author suggested stopping at Lick Observatory. I like driving and I like space, so I decided to do that drive. I took the freeway down to San Jose, then got off and drove through a county park on a very windy road (that gets a lot of complaints on Yelp) until I got to the observatory. Then I drove the “back way” home, which was 50 deserted, windy miles. (I didn’t pass a single car for 24 miles, and only a total of four for 40 miles.) I had had vague plans of taking a lot of photos of scenery, but on the total of 70 scenic miles (not counting the freeways) I drove, there was very rarely any place to pull over so really all the photo taking I did was at the observatory.
