FINALLY! I FINALLY saw a coyote! I don’t know why it took so long – over a year! – but at long last, here is my coyote. I don’t know if I’d call coyote sightings “common” as they are kind of unpredictable, but people see coyotes around here with enough regularity that I’d thought that someone that goes out specifically looking for wildlife as often as I do would have seen several by now. (And actually, I have seen one: my best friend Fortinbras and I saw one while driving away from the tule elk reservation at Point Reyes a few months ago, but I didn’t get a picture so I haven’t really been “counting” it.) Moreover, most of the times I’ve been to Point Reyes I’ve talked to someone who saw a coyote within 5 minutes of me being there. So I feel like they are just running rampant in Point Reyes. And yet I somehow kept missing them. Coyote sightings are definitely more common than bobcat sightings and I’ve had two confirmed bobcat sightings (plus two undocumented sightings). I’ve seen several different species of owls that are rarely seen. I have fairly good luck seeing things, but for some reason, coyotes continued to elude me. Then the other day at Point Reyes I looked up a hill at some cattle and saw a smaller, light brown blob mingling with the black cows, so I whipped my camera up to my face and holy cats IT WAS A COYOTE!!! Unfortunately all my pictures are super blurry and none of them would be “keepers” if they weren’t the only coyote pictures I have. SO FAR! I continue my quest…
