I have a vague goal of visiting all of the parks in the immense and great East Bay Regional Park District system (it’s the largest in the country!) but I definitely prefer certain types of parks over others, my first criteria being a high chance of wildlife encounters. I was reading a review of Kennedy Grove Park that contained a line about an abundance of wildlife, so a few weeks ago I headed up that way. I was kind of disappointed when I arrived to find that Kennedy Grove is actually a pretty small park and more for barbecuing, picnicking, and playing sports than doing any serious hiking or wildlife watching. When I reread the review I realized it had said that Kennedy Grove is by an EBMUD (East Bay Municipal Utility District) trailhead and the wildlife comment was referring to the EBMUD TRAIL, not Kennedy Grove itself. Which was kind of okay because I had recently purchased an EBMUD permit, so I did a little of both the park and the EBMUD trail, but I think dividing up my time like that didn’t allow me to go far enough on the EBMUD trail to get to the amazing wildlife because I didn’t really see any. I don’t know that I’ll be rushing back to Kennedy Grove, but there were some nice views, and TREES, which can sometimes be scarce in East Bay parks.
