Swallows in general are both easy and hard for photographers. All of the species of swallows I have ever encountered have been very accepting of being close to humans. I don’t know if it’s because they tend to hang out in large groups and they feel like there’s safety in numbers or what, but swallows seem to fly very near people very often. They problem is they swoop and loop and are kind of erratic. Their flight is actually very beautiful to watch, but very difficult to try to photograph. But if you can find a swallow sitting still, they tend to let you get quite close to them, and they will often sit out in the open to boot, instead of hidden behind a bunch of leaves in a tree. I also think they are very pretty birds. I believe this particular swallow is a tree swallow and he was one of my favorite things about the day I was playing with my new camera at Hayward Regional Shoreline.
