I attended a lecture about raptors a few weeks ago and the speaker, who has written several field guides on California raptors, said that Alameda Creek in Niles was a great place to see raptors, including peregrine falcons, which I’ve never seen in the wild. Niles is not too far from me so I headed over there after work one day. The Alameda Creek Regional Trail is a 12-mile trail following Alameda Creek from Niles Canyon to the bay, going through a couple regional parks on the way.
“NILES” is spelled out on a hill over the canyon – you can’t make it out in the photo but it’s the white thing on the right of the hill.
I liked the look of some of the unpretentious houses along the creek.
