I mentioned recently how much I miss regularly seeing bald eagles as I did in Virginia. If there is anything I miss more, it’s regularly seeing foxes, which I love, love, love. In Virginia we had only red foxes. California has both native gray foxes and non-native red foxes, which were introduced for their fur years ago. Red foxes are considered a nuisance here because they prey on a couple different endangered native species. While I am extremely sensitive to endangered species and I GET the problem with non-native species, I am going to tell you something that may make me seem like a bad person: I think red foxes are more beautiful than gray foxes. The only non-captive gray foxes I have seen so far were so far away they barely count, and I assure you than when and if I am able to better photograph a gray fox, I will be super excited, but I really do miss Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia where if I timed my visit right, I almost ALWAYS saw a (non-controversial, there) red fox and every single time it made me SO HAPPY. So although some people regard the red foxes at Hayward Shoreline to be a “problem”, I have been hoping to get a glimpse of one. My hopes were realized beyond my wildest dreams when I came across this fox sleeping maybe 100 feet from me. Although he was fully aware I was there, too, he let me photograph him for 40 MINUTES. No fox in Occoquan EVER did that!
You can’t tell me this isn’t one of the most beautiful animals in the world:
