Muir Woods, part 3

Happy March 4th! This is totally random, but one of my all-time favorite bands is Morphine and in their song Radar the inimitable Mark Sandman says, “If I am guilty, so are you. It was March 4th, 1982.” No one knows the significance of that date (if there is one) and as Mark Sandman is very sadly no longer here to explain it, we will never know, but that line gets stuck in my head sometimes. OK, random aside aside…on with the post:

I loved the Muir Woods series. The place looks magical.

I’ve wondered if you feel at home on the left coast yet. I had a chance to move to Washington state years ago when I visited my niece there. The Cascades were also magic but I’m a midwestern girl, in touch with my midwestern plants and animals, and feared that I would never feel at home there.

I am apparently not getting notified when I get comments here! I just saw this.

I am starting to feel at home here, but I don’t know how true that would be if I hadn’t found the wildlife hospitals that I did and felt so welcome there. It would have been very tough and lonely for me otherwise, but they give me a sense of connection. There is so much to learn about and explore here. I think after 10+ years in Virginia, I was ready for a change, and California seems to be providing me with what I most want: the opportunity to admire, learn about, and interact with wildlife. Will I stay here forever? I don’t know. A more long-time goal of mine is to spend an extended period of time in Africa, though, and I honestly don’t know if I would ever feel truly at home there as it is so much more different than California is from Virginia. I probably do adapt to change fairly easily and I thrive on new experiences, but that would be a drastic lifestyle change. Then again, if what makes me happy is being near and learning about wildlife, I’d be so overwhelmed with that there maybe I wouldn’t have time to think about anything else!

I’m happy to hear that you’re settling in and feeling at home.

I moved to the south shore of Lake Superior a few years ago. It’s wild and beautiful here. There’s far less critter/human interaction so there’s less need for wildlife rehab. I equally miss rehabbing, and am glad there’s not much need for it.
