I made a mistake last weekend. First, I slept too late on Saturday, which limited where I could go because I needed to be back for an evening program at Sulphur Creek. So I looked at the map and tried to pick a place to hike I could get to in less than 45 minutes. Traffic on the bay bridges was looking pretty atrocious so I looked east. I settled on Brushy Peak Regional Park because it’s usually full of raptor goodness. My second mistake, though, was I managed to forget it would be 20 degrees warmer in Livermore. It was pleasant at our house, but I felt that sudden blast of outrageously hot air a few minutes after getting on 580.

Anyway, there’s a ranch about a mile before the road dead-ends at Brushy Peak. As I was driving in, I liked the way the golden hills and blue sky were reflecting in this water:

Even better than the water colors, though, was this horse, who was clearly trying to cool off:
