Animals at Hayward Shoreline

My very good friend Duke, from Sydney, was here for a few days last week. He usually spends time at our house decompressing from being an international man of mystery, and tends to think he’s healthier than usual when he’s here, I guess because I feed him homemade vegan food. He also likes to go for runs. The first two days, I sent him out on runs in our neighborhood, but we have KILLER hills and on the third day he announced his legs couldn’t take any more abuse and would I please take him to the park. Last time he was here I took him to Lake Chabot, the trail around the lake being pretty flat, but this time I decided Hayward Shoreline was the answer because it has zero elevation gain whatsoever and because it was a hot day and the cool breezes off the bay would help. While the Thin White Duke was running, I moseyed around with my camera.

Because they don’t have squirrels in Australia, Duke is somewhat obsessed with them. He finds them very cute. He watches them intently if he sees them out in the yard, and after his run he informed me he had seen 20 of them. This is a ground squirrel.

I didn’t see that many terribly interesting birds, but here is a gull:
