Random birds at Hudeman Slough

Lots of mockingbirds at Hudeman Slough:

I want to say this is a gold-crowned sparrow but I feel like it should have blacker bands on its head.

I feel like I should know this.

Owl guruly comments welcome.

Golden-crowned Sparrow is still in winter plumage; the black and yellow should get more intense over the next few weeks. Last bird is a shrike.

Thank you, owl guru! I KNEW I should have known the shrike. I just got a new “learning bird ID for the hopeless” book; now I need to find time to read it…
