Golden Gate Raptor Observatory

The Golden Gate Raptor Observatory is a program dedicated to the study of raptor migration along the Pacific Flyway, specifically over the Golden Gate. I very seriously considered volunteering with them as a bird bander this fall but in the end decided I’d be overextending myself if I did. I regret it a bit, though I really, really don’t have the time. I talked to a park ranger back in the spring who participates in their banding program and he said it was really great. Banding is definitely the project I would have volunteered for, but the more public-facing aspect of GGRO’s work is the hawk count. Following a raptor identification class the other week, I spent an afternoon with the Hawk Count crew, completely in awe of their ID skills. They have a great sense of camaraderie, and I just like people who get all excited about seeing raptors. These are some pictures of the GGRO in action, scanning the skies for migrating raptors.
