Golden eagles at Briones

A few days after finding hail instead of burrowing owls at Briones, I decided to return and try again under sunnier skies and ended up having an incredible day! I photographed FOUR raptors I’d never photographed before, and one I’d never even SEEN before. (Spoiler: the one I’d never seen was a BURROWING OWL!!!)

The first raptor I photographed for the first time – at least as a non-captive – were a few golden eagles. This is apparently a good time of year to see them (it’s mating season!). Golden eagles are very rare in the Mid-Atlantic where I come from; I only ever saw one and that was an education bird at a nature center, and they weren’t really sure what he was doing in the area when he was shot. (Also, who the hell shoots eagles?? That is NOT OKAY.) I miss all the bald eagles I saw regularly in Virginia, but seeing some golden eagles helped.
